About Us

My name is Sally Bowler and this bed and breakfast business is my dream. I invite you to come and live like a local.

I have spent my life working as a Registered Nurse across a range of specialities but spent most of my time working in the operating theatres in NZ and the UK. I currently work in the community managing the care of individuals back home after they’ve been discharged from hospital.

I have two wonderful daughters that I have spent time raising and participating in their sporting passions. They are now adults and are starting their own adventures very similar to my own.

Once the girls left school I moved here to run this bed and breakfast, I enjoy people and cooking so this fits well with my other passions, skiing and hiking.

Gem bed and breakfast has two rooms with queen size beds and their own private bathrooms. Another room is available with a double size bed if a group wishes to book or two couples or a couple with one teenager, this room does not have its own bathroom and they would need to share the bathroom. 

The property has two lounges for guest use, one with a television which provides free to air channels, Neon and Netflix. The corner lounge has an outside patio area which gets great sun and has fabulous mountain views.

There is an outside dining area, and an outside relaxing area for guest use.

Not far away is a mountain bike park where you can rent bikes and have a self guided experience. The scenery is great and the bike paths are excellent. There are also great short walks which can be explored from here. The Rakaia gorge and slightly further away is Arthurs pass.

You could also explore Godley head on Banks peninsula which has great views and walking. Ski fields are about an hour away so we are the perfect base for your ski holiday.

Food and Dining

Breakfast will be provided for all guests at no additional charge. Evening meals can be provided at an additional charge with 36 hours notice.

Tea and coffee provided at no additional charge.

Wine and beer can be provided at an additional charge. If you require drinks please advise me in advance of your requirements.

    • What is the cancellation policy? Cancellations or modifications made up to 14 days prior to your arrival incur no fee. Cancellations made within 14 days incur a 50% charge, and within 7 days, the full booking amount is charged. Direct multi-night bookings or discounted rates require a 28-day cancellation notice to avoid a full-charge penalty.

    • How is payment handled? Credit card details are required to secure the booking, with the full amount processed 14 days before your arrival.

  • What amenities are included in the rooms? Rooms are allergy-free and feature private patios or terraces, mountain or garden views, and complimentary bathrobes. Each bedroom has its own bathroom across the hall way

  • Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and free private on-site parking is available for guests.
